Which got me thinking about sexual fantasies in general. It can be really hard to voice your fantasies to a friend or partner, especially if you view them as strange or taboo. However, you may be surprised to learn some of the most common sexual fantasies, perhaps yours won't seem so 'out there' after reading on...

In my research for this piece I came across this survey - Top 10 Sexual Fantasies for Women - according to a study by the University of Quebec - which were the following;

1. Sex in a romantic location
2. Sex in an unusual place
3. Taking part in oral sex
4. Performing oral sex on a male
5. Being masturbated by a partner
6. Masturbating my partner
7. Sex with a non spouse acquaintance
8. Being dominated sexually
9. Sex in a public place
10. Sex with more than 3 people, both men and women.

This survey was of 799 women between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. I do really hope for their sake that oral sex doesn't remain on their list of fantasies, or that the fact that it ranks so highly as one means that nobody is getting any oral sex!

Luckily, after further research, oral sex didn't appear so much and the most common fantasies appear to involve power play, scene changes, different partners, pain / pleasure and also romantic fantasies. In the Journal of Sexual Medicine, 85% of women were found to fantasise about getting it on in a romantic location, such as a deserted beach. Have we really been conditioned that much by romantic novels and films? Perhaps, but also for women, getting turned on does tend to involve more brainpower as emotional and contextual factors are more important than for men, generally of course.

Domination, power play and the pain / pleasure fantasies are certainly very common, and the success of Fifty Shades of Grey really illustrates this. Nearly 65% of women fantasise about being dominated in the bedroom (The Journal of Sexual Medicine). For many the feelings of release that come from relinquishing control can be their top turn on.

Group sex is also a common fantasy, from threesomes to more than 3 sexual partners at once. Psychologists theorise that the feeling of being seen, valued and wanted could be what attracts people to these scenarios, as multiple partners lusting after you can be the ultimate validation for some.

A study found that 59% of women fantasise about sex with other women. Whether you are looking for someone who understands what turns you on the best, or perhaps just find more freedom and choice around sex. Fantasies about attraction to the same sex, if your relationships are generally with the opposite sex, can be part of a feeling of being liberated sexually. And who doesn't want to feel that?

Sex in unusual places or public also ranks high. The thrill of perhaps getting caught, the variety of a new place can all make sex seem even hotter. Fantasies about sex with strangers are also common, for many reasons, including that the impersonal nature of such a hook-up could allow you to completely let go of your inhibitions, in a way that you never could with someone that you know.

I think that what all fantasies have in common is the idea of fresh and different scenarios and feelings. As humans, in the bedroom we are prone to repeating what we know works, and this can lead to boredom, especially in long term relationships. I think what fantasies illustrate is that if we want to have sizzling sex lives, then we need to put in the effort to keep things interesting. Obvious, perhaps, but definitely worth thinking about...
